Smoke from engine bay 3.0 TDi
Hi guys
noticed some smoke coming from engine bay after driving the car. took the cover off and had a good look around. the smoke doesnt smell of anything so definitley not any type of hydraulic fluid or oil, and the coolant level all seems to be in order.
the only thing i managed to find was a white frost like deposit near the turbo, so cleaned it off to see if it was that. after driving around a bit its come back so i think this is whats smoking. Any ideas on what this is?
AC seems to be working fine too and the white substance doesnt smell or taste of anything

Hi - Did you discover what this is? Just got exactly the same on my '66 plate A8L - lots of smoke coming off when stopped after motorway run- seemed to have whiff of ammonia so suspect AirCon?

That looks very similar to what DEF fluid looks like if spilled. Perhaps a DEF leak?
Here it is on a VW.

Thanks for the quick answer - that makes complete sense and explains the slight whiff of ammonia. The crystallised appearance is all over the bottom cover under the engine and the back of the engine block under the injector. I refilled with AdBlu last week - I wonder if I over-filled it?

Good advice, thank you. It's due a service and MOT anyway. Did a quick 'G' search and there were loads of results of this type of problem with VW, Audi, Porsche, et al. Also picked up on a general recall for a fuel injection fault that could cause a fire on some Audi's (mine included). Disappointing. I've had Audi's for 40 years.
