Are we closer to having true Matrix Headlights in North America?

Could we be getting closer to adaptive headlights allowed in the US? Will our headlights meet the standard though.............

The Audi LED lights on Prestige trims are supposed to be activated by software. Would love to see this happen! Though sad to hear it could take two years to implement.

Yes, it's activated by software but it requires extensive calibration at the dealership which is done on a per car basis. It's not going to be an OTA update.

And the current matrix “design” headlights have to meet whatever non-glare standard is approved. As I’ve previously cautioned, I’m not sure our matrix units will do that, at least not from the reading I’ve done—IIRC the NHTSA non-glare testing evaluations hadn't given the D5’s matrix units a “clean” pass. Hope I’m wrong on this.

NHTSA finally approves. Could it be? Will ours work and be enabled?

When I spoke to Audi of America last week they were expecting it to still be several years before we would have them. After this news yesterday……I contacted my dealer to have them inquire. We will see (I hope).

I just emailed my dealer’s service manager about enabling the matrix units on my D5. Let’s see how that goes. Will probably take Audi a year just to get their act together to get us an answer on this—I’m guessing.

Well........it's not over yet....it's the government, of course.....here's an excerpt from a more detailed article in TheDrive.com:
"The text that enables this change is relatively straightforward. Under section 24212 of the bill, which is appropriately titled "HEADLAMPS," it's stated that "Not later than 2 years after the date of enactment of this Act, the Secretary shall issue a final rule amending Standard 108"—that's the transportation regulation pertaining to headlight design. The bill states that this section of the code should be amended "to allow for the use on vehicles of adaptive driving beam headlamp systems." In a nutshell, once H.R.3684 gets passed, the transportation secretary has two years to make adaptive headlights a thing in the United States. It could happen sooner, but that's the maximum timeline. "
So the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (H.R.3684), that's set to become law, has the matrix headlight change requirement attached to it......just like probably hundreds of other things that don't fit in an "infrastructure investment and jobs" act....congressional sausage making!
