100 V6 Hydraulic lifter replacement
Hi guys,
I've just picked up a 92 100 quattro with the 2.8 v6 engine. I was wondering what the procedure for replacing the hydraulic lifters is. (have ordered a manual from the usa as they dont sell one for the v6 here (uk) and it hasnt turned up yet)
I think the oil non return valve has failed for the left hand bank of cylinders as it has just started making a nasty rattle on startup which disappears almost immediately (lasts for 2 seconds max). Once its all warmed up, the left hand bank is slightly noisier than the right hand bank in terms of valvegear noise so I thought I'd replace the lifters. Ive never owned a car with hydraulic lifters before so this bit will be new to me!
Do the cams have to come out for this or can it be done witout disturbing them. I dont fancy disturbing them as I understand theyre a cow to realign. I am however planning to give it a birthday soon and replace the cambelt, waterpump, thermostat, idler and tensioner etc so if I had to remove the cams then that would be a good time for it!
If anyone can offer me some advice on this, it'd be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Geoff

Cams have to be removed to replace lifters. Since you have to remove the cams, you might also...
perform the timing belt (TB) maintenance (TB, tensioner, idler, water pump, thermostat), unless you it been performed recently. Definately follow the Bentley Repair manual to replace the lifters. You might even try to replace the oil retention valves before replacing the lifters and see if that cures your problem. These valves are located under the intake manifold (IM), which is an easier repair than the lifter replacement.
