Default 1997 Audi S6 6 spd manual, possible purchase ---->

There is a 97 Audi S6 with a 6 speed gearbox for sale here in Johannesburg at what seems to be a reasonable price (+/- $ 8000.-).
Although I will only see the car on Tuesday, the sales person from who I have bought my other Audi (new) reckons the car is in good condition.

Since I know nothing about the previous generation S6's, I would appreciate your comments, as well as what to look for with regards to possible problems.

The car has 120.000 Km (74580 miles) and is green metallic. Only has had one owner.

Also, what are the car specs?. I know it is a 230 bhp turbo 5 cylinder 2.2 l engine.
How many valves per cylinder?
Tyres and wheels size?
Quattro distribution front/back 50/50?

The more info the better

Thanks
Andre'

Default Oh man, that's just flat out UNFAIR!

Ok, I'm very excited at the possibility of you buying an UrS6, Andre, but what is simply unfair is the price of that car... oh_my_word! Here in America that car would cost about US$18-$22k.

A very detailed FAQ can be found at... UrS4.com (best site for the UrS4/S6) ... I would just be repeating what's already there to get into FAQ details. Read that, and then come back with more detailed questions.

On second thought... I can't resist.

The car uses quattro II with a manually engage-able (by way of button on the center console) torsen center diff system... works very much like the quattro in your new S6.

The car only had a few options...

- Delete sunroof
- CD changer
- Pearl white paint

*Everything* else was standard. But everything else won't include stuff like auto dimming mirrors, xenon lights, sunshades, rear airbags, etc.

There were two engine and transmission options in 1997... the standard I5 20v (4v per cylinder) turbo, with 227HP, and then a 4.2L 32v V8 with 290HP. Also, there was an S6 Plus available, with a 4.2L, 326 HP V8 with various other intense upgrades.

Standard wheels were 16" avus style... the S6 Plus got 17" wheels. The combo of these wheels with the rather soft suspension makes for quite a bit of body roll... so wheel/tire and suspension upgrades are very common on the UrS4/6.

IMPORTANT STUFF:

Service history. One owner doesn't mean it was maintained properly. Good (great) physical condition at 120kkm would indicate a solid mechanical past, but you will want to ensure that...

- The timing belt, tensioner, water pump, thermostat, and accessory belt were replaced. If they haven't been, they will need to be done ASAP to prevent catostrophic engine damage should the TB or WP fail (interfernce engine).

- Regular oil/filter changes were done, as well as additional items for a total of at least 8 regular services since the car was new.

- Electrical items are all in working order. They are expensive to fix, and at times, a pain to fix as well.

- Car has not been abused. Look into modification history, etc. Remember, this car can EASILY be brought to 350+HP... fortunately the engine and transmission can take it, but lower quality engine management software and other modifications can damage the engine and other components. IMO, an unmodified car is best even if you want to modify it.

For another good buyer's guide... check S-Cars.org ...

Here in America it costs about $1,200-$1,800 per year to own an UrS6 and drive it as a primary car... brakes, tires, service, repairs, etc, all add up.

Default So you might have a NuS6 and UrS6?

So... if I were to take a trip to affrica, would you let me drool over your cars? ;-)

Default We're coming anyway.... especially if you don't buy it. ;)

Gotta be SOME way to claim we're students from South Africa "just visiting" America, so we can import it... hehe.
