I was just wondering if it is possible to swap a 4.2 from a 01 A6 into my 96 A6? Is there enough room and is it physically possible?

You need more than just the engine, so it would cost more than to buy an existing used A6 with a 4.2L. Why? When? Where? How?
If you don't like your 1996 A6, then just trade it in for an A6 with a 4.2L. However, don't complain when your tank needs filling more often.

Yes it is possible. Yes it will fit (came factory on the S6+ in Europe).

Going from a 1996 2.8L 12 valve AFC engine to a 4.2L V8 is just not economical, since it is not a direct replacement. Also, an European S6 made for a 4.2L is not an A6 made for a 2.8L AFC engine. The 4.2L would have a different transmission, ECM and TCM. The subframe, frame, hubs and axles may be different. If quattro, then the propeler shaft, rear differential and axles may be different. It may be difficult to locate reasonably priced used parts for such a project with an 1996 A6 with C4 chassis, since there were very few in America with the 4.2L engine.
