92Q bizarre electrical / transmission problem - help!

Just to close this out - I eventually removed the transmission mount and got to the F125 switch, but I couldn't get the bolts off. I ended up having a local shop replace the switch for me (they've got a Herbie the Love Bug in their showroom!) and it resolved the problem.
Thanks for all the feedback - but in this case, it looks like VAG-COM nailed it - F125.
