'97 A6Q - AC Recharge - Final Word as far as I'm concerned
<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/42442/audi03.jpg"></center><p>Morning all:
Have posted a few times inquiring about the location of the Low Pressure valve on the A6 so I can do a AC system charge. Never heard back, so I thought I would share what I found out after working on it this weekend.
In a previous forum post, it is stated that -
"The service port is located on the passenger side under the tray (cover) that protects the climate control components and fuse box under the hood."
In another one, it says -
"All of the ports are in the back of the compressor... there's a nipple back there, but I don't know which side it's on"
And finally, one last post states -
"On rear of compressor, at side"
So, what's a fella to do on a Saturday afternoon when temps are already hitting the high 80's? Me and the Pops-In-Law checked EVERYWHERE. We followed all of the hoses on the AC system, the compressor, under the plastic cover by the windshield etc, etc...
The verdict? The High Pressure schrader valve is on the right side of the radiator. There is NO low pressure port. A call to my Pops-In-Law's mechanic who specializes in german imports confirms this.
According to him, in order to recharge the system, the freon is pumped in through the high-pressure schrader. To do this you need a Recovery System setup which all AC guys will have on hand. Since this system costs about two grand, spending $45 to have someone do it for you suddenly seems economical.
I want to post this information on the Car Maintenance Thread. But before I do, I wanted to see if everyone is in agreement on this. Also, I lost the link to that damn thread, too. So, if you all could look this over and provide me with the link if you think it's accurate, I would appreciate it.

R134a conversion
Hi,
Just throwing in my $0.02 and also hijacking your post
I am taking my car to a mechanic who claims that an R134a conversion is only ~$150. Does anyone else have input on this?
thanks

found it
I was just getting ready to post something when I found this post. Under the tray, near the blower motor assembly is a sending unit mounted to the low pressure a/c line. According my directions, you unhook the sending unit wire and then unscrew the sending unit from the low pressure line.
Here's the problem, none of the connectors I have will fit. At first I thought I had an R12 system, but my mechanic is telling me that it should be the 134. The port is threaded, but even the R12 adapter doesn't fit. So either there's an adapter out there or you have to fill from the high pressure port......

you should be able to thread it on their and then jump the wires
you need to jump the wires to get the compressor to run during charging. it should work... I have done it in the past, but unfortunatly i lost my adapter so can't tell you what it was or where i got it. but I need to do my 92 this week.

Re: '97 A6Q - AC Recharge - Final Word as far as I'm concerned
So what is the final verdict. I WILL NOT convert to 134A when FREEZE 12 (legal freon replacement) is readily available at NAPA. Where is the low side or should I fill from high side which is located Where? P.S. I'm not really concerned about recovery either, if there was anything to recover, the a/c would work,
Any and All help appreciated.
