A6 avant gas mileage...
What is typical for city driving only on these cars? My wife's car has been getting around 240 miles per tank which is what, 15 miles to the gallon...seems low.

How are you checking the mileage? When I first got my Avant and
drove it down from NH (about 100 miles) it showed 1/2 a tank as gone. I was panicked! Using the refill and division based on trip odometer method, I found out that my real mileage was around 20, which was much more palatable. So, could just be a bad gas gauge, like mine.
If not, O2 sensors are supposed to have a dramatic effect, though you're not getting a CEL - that big an issue would likely throw a code. Check your tire pressure and wheel alignment too, and maybe toss in some injector cleaner.
Also, have you ever done your plugs or wires on it? How many miles does it have?

I've experienced similar results after a tank of gas.
My gauge does the same thing; goes to half way with about 100 miles. When I refill and divide I may get around 17, so I guess that is about right given the size/weight of the car with the automatic V6 4 speed POS. The tranny on this car is not well matched to the engine.
I just got the car last June and it was Audi mechanic owned and maintained. Don't know when plug wires, plugs were changes though. Maybe I'll just do a tune up on it.

When my mileage is REALLY crappy I get about 17-18 mpg. Usually 20 or 21 but...
on the road I've gone 230 miles on an indicated half tank and gotten as high as 26mpg so who knows why the mileage sometimes tanks.
After I do my throttle body and MAF conversions I might get better mpg (and definitely more power.)
