The FAQ from Mann someone posted was quite helpful and when I went there the slot for the filter was empty save a couple large handfuls of leaves and misc. at the bottom. I blew it all out (a mess!) and put in the new charcoal filter. Hopefully it makes a difference but that's really strange to not have one...?

Perfectly normal -- US cars didn't have it.

Even though the C4 had the slot for it, MY '97 US cars were the first year that had the filter.

Really?! So putting one in shouldn't hurt if there's a slot for it?

Default What model year did you buy the filter for, for your '96

I was going to buy one too, but I didn't know if you buy the one for later A6 models, A4, or what?

I find it interesting that they wouldn't put one in the U.S. models...? Nice addition and only $25.

Default From the FAQ: "The part number is 4A1 820 367"

From the omnipresent beep-beep's post:

The part number is 4A1 820 367

It was not installed on US model, but all US models have the place to put it. Order the above part from the dealer (~$30) dollars. Remove the whiper arms. Remove two plenum chumber covers. Find the AC box (on the passanger side). Remove three holding bolts and put the filter in.
