It's taking a long time to get heat in the cabin. Temp gauge is working properly. I hear the blower running, that's fine. I don't smell coolant inside, heater core not a problem. Is this just the way things are?

Heater cores become plugged. I know; I've had a 98 12v since new
First I thought...thermostat. Replaced that and still little heat, and none at idle. Then tried the main heater flap controller because it can be changed without removing the heater box: no change. Finally bit the bullet and took out the original 10 yr old heater core. PLUGGED! I could barely blow through it. New core = warm and heated smiles from the wife. Tip: get an all-copper heater core (vs. one with the plastic, soon-to-leak ends). advance auto parts; the core arrived with partsamerica.com paperwork. customer service: 877-808-0698. I do not recall the part number, but online, you are given the option to order the all-metal core. you will need to shim the smaller inlet/outlet to fit the larger audi hoses (I sweated on a copper sleeve to each tube). Actually I've done this two times: once on 93 100cs and again on 98 a6 wagon. PS!!! you do not need to loosen/remove the center console as many advise on this forum!!! just remove the glove box on the right, and the underdash panels on the left, then reach in from the sides (inside the car) to unplug the air ducts and the two electrical plugs as you remove the heater box from the engine-compartment side of the firewall. 4-6 hour job if you are mechanically competent.
