CEL turns on but scan tool finds no trouble codes...???

Can't remember brand but I've always borrowed the same one at an O'Reilly or Autozone...
I've gotten the trouble codes before when using it, fixed the problem, cleared the code and no problem. Recently this CEL is showing no trouble codes or pending touble codes.
