Default Changed O2 sensors..

Car -- 1992 100CSQ

I used the Bosch 13913 sensors from my FLAPS.

The wire on the sensors seems to be stainless. I couldn't solder it with 60/40 rosin core. I dug out the roll of electronics grade silver solder that I aquired from an ex-employer and that did the trick. I staggered the splices and used heat shrink tubing.

When I went for a test ride I was surprised that my ABS warning light was off. (it's been on since I bought the car -- it's one of those "round tuit" projects) But alas, it came back on once I started rolling. I had thought for a minute there that I fixed the ABS by changing the O2 sensor! ;-)

The car runs tons better. I was getting really bad hesitation right off idle. The date code on the old O2 sensor(s) was 22/92. I think they were LONG past expired.

One thing I noticed... I thought I saw somewhere (12v.org?) that the early V6's have a vacuum pump on the rear of the right cylinder head? Mine doesn't. Just a cover plate.

You might want to take out all of your antilock sensors and spray them down with brakekleen as well as clean ou tthe slots they go in.. that fixed it for me..

Default Any problems getting out the old sensors?

I have been looking into replacing mine, but am curious about how difficult it will be to pull out the old sensors. They look original as it sounds like your's were, and I am wondering about the best way to approach the removal process.

Thanks...

They were tight little buggers! I went and bought the O2 socket from the local farm store. (Sears was useless once again. I tried them first. When will I learn, only use Sears to return screwdrivers used as pry-bars!!!)

On the right side I had to remove the bracket from the rear of the cylinder head to get a more clear shot at it. After a few attempts where I thought I would break the ratchet I found the combo that worked. A 1/2" ratchet with 6" extension plugged into a reducer to a 3/8" 6" extension that connected to the socket. I figured that if the reducer snapped I could go back to the 3/8" ratchet!

The left side was a breeze except for the stupid little cable clamp on the wires. Came off easy, but was a b@tch to reattach back there!

I used a 2 foot pipe slid over the ratchet handle for extra leverage and finesse.

Default Re: abs light

make sure those sensors on all 4 wheels are as close to the hub as you can get them.. if they(the sensors)cant talk to the little nubs on the hubas the run by, you get the light..

good luck.

Default Re: abs light (more strangeness)...

It's weird that in the month that I've owned the car I've NEVER seen the light off. Even when starting. I thought it was more of an electrical problem than a sensor.

Since I changed the O2 sensors, both times I've driven the car the light has started off and come on after driving. Now it's starting to act like it's a sensor problem.

I checked the rear sensors last weekend -- Pulled 'em out, cleaned with a rag and stuck 'em back in. I guess I'll have to look at the fronts this weekend.

What's with this recall?

NHTSA Recall History

1992: Blades in brake vacuum booster pump can wear prematurely, causing reduced assist pressure when pedal is applied; could increase stopping distance.

Or this page?

The text describes a vacuum pump that was deleted in 1993.<ul><li><a href="http://dev.12v.org/engine.php?section=diags&amp;view=rear">12v.org</a></li></ul>

Default I stand corrected....

..The 90's never came with that since they didn't get the V6 until '93. However, it appears that the 100's did have it for that one year.

Here's another view of the vacuum pump...

<img src="http://catalog.exist.ru/pic/parts/VAG11222.gif">

I wouldn't worry about not having it since it was deleted a year later anyway. The 10v (5cyl) came equipped with vacuum pumps and a lot of people dismantle them because they get noisey as they age.

The brake vacuum pump is just some over-engineering by Audi That's clear because Audi quit making the vacuum pump shown above....it's listed as "No longer Available".

HTH!!
