Default Help with strange problem

Hey Guys - haven't posted in a while 'cause all has been pretty good with my '96 A6 Avant...until tonight. Cruising down the highway - doin' about 50 when I hear a "thump" and the "Brake" & "Anti-lock brake off" lights come on - for a second. Then all is well. Then it happens again about 5 seconds later, then OK again. Does this about 4 times. Get off the highway and down the exit ramp -- at the light at the bottom of the ramp it does it again and the car stalls (almost seemed as if I had a manual and it was still in gear w/o depressing the clutch). I also noticed that the temperature display went out. Put the car in park, start it up and drive off -- doesn't happen again all the way home; granted I only had another mile or two to go. Any ideas? Some kind of switch? Electrical short? I've no clue at this point...
Thanks in advance.

Default My initial thought is a failed ignition switch, but hard to tell by what you're saying.

I would certainly do a quick inspection under the hood and under the car.

But, you're getting weird "warning" icons just going down the road, and then it dies on you for no reason. To me, that spells ignition switch failure.

They're about $35 at the dealer, and you only want to buy the real switch, from a dealer. The aftermarket switches fail fast. Takes about 30min to install, via the opening where the instrument cluster is located. Details are in the FAQ's.

Default I'd say if you haven't replaced the switch in a few years it's good insurance. Try....

genuineaudiparts.com for real dealer stuff.

Default Re: OK - sounds like you and Todd are in agreement; but which one...

I checked around and at genuineaudiparts.com they list four:

Electrical - Ignition system - Ignition lock - Ignition switch - $76.32 ($54.95)

Electrical - Ignition system - Ignition switch - no price listed (have to call)

Steering column - Steering column assembly - Lock housing - W/ignition switch - $124.95 ($89.82)

Steering column - Steering column assembly - Ignition switch - $35.03 ($25.22)

At these prices it's a no-brainer that I'll pop in a new one -- but which one? Thanks again!

Nice! Thanks a lot rmccomiskie! And, in reply to kinderutz, I do not have "Vag-com" (sp?) so I don't know about codes -- if any.
