usually changing thermostat involves TB/water pump change. Nevertheless people done it without it.
use FAQ article (link bellow) for the timing belt procedure. It also includes the thermostat change. I will replace my timing belt on monday - I will post updates and some pictures.
Otherwise you can search this forum - people replaced thermostat some very funky way.

Per the Bentley Manual, Dexron is the specified ATF for the C4 auto trannies. A newer ATF is...
Dexron II now recommended by ZF, which is the manufacturer of all VW/Audi auto trannies, that supercedes the Dexron ATF. But you can use Dexron if you can't find the newer ATF in your area (other than the dealer), which is made by all major oil companies. When I get home, I will post the recommended newer ATF from ZF.

Newer ZF recommended ATF...
P/Ns for this fluid:
* Audi: G 052 162 A2
* VW: TL 52162
* Pentosin: Z8001-87949
The ZF latest List of Lubricants is TE-ML 11, dated 01 2005. On that list, there are several ATFs listed from major oil companies. For the USA, Exxon Mobil is primarily listed for these ATFs:
* Esso ATF D2
* Mobil ATF 220
* Esso ATF D (21065)
* Esso ATF LT 71141
I used Pentosin ATF purchased from a local foreign car parts dealer @ $15/liter a couple of months ago to change my ATF & filter. Link provided to ZF's listing.<ul><li><a href="http://www01apps.zf.com/kst464/ZF_InteroeleV2_download/download.asp?doStatistik=1&doMode=1&mode=3 &doID=1&id=813">ZF List of Lubricants TE-ML 11</a></li></ul>
