Default Idler Pulley

I was unable to find an Idler pulley for my 95 A6Q, and so after discussing with my mechanic (he has a 100 and a 90), decided to just skip it during my 70K water pump/timing belt change.

Anyone have any experience with bad idler pulleys? should i be worried??

Default The idler is less likely to fail... mine is at 96k without any problems on my 100CS

But I did replace it on my '96 A6. My mechanic said he had replaced a few and if I wanted to be on the extremely safe side, I could replace it while everything was apart. The tensioner is the more important roller... are you replacing that?

Buy it from an Audi dealer.

Default Re: Idler Pulley

I could not find an aftermarket idler pulley, so I sucked it up and got one from Audi. If you are doing the timing belt, water pump, etc. job yourself and want someone on standby just in case you have any questions, send me an email and I'll give you my phone number. I just finished doing the COMPLETE timing belt job on my 1996 A6 Avant Front Wheel Drive.

It took me about 5 hours to do. It was my first time so the little things slowed me up a bunch (finding the right tools, actually finding the radiator drains, crank centering plug, etc.) I am sure I could do it in 3 or so hours next time around. Have fun.
