Default Latest findings with my auto tranny.

I did a lot of checking today on my tranny and here's what I found:

1. Front Differential has good fluid in it
2. All CV-Joints are intact
3. Indicator on dash shows correct gear selection (valid multiswitch test?)
4. I located the TCU and disconnected it. The transmission worked in exactly the same manner as with it plugged in other than a harsher shift into reverse. Still no forward movement. Did not test for limp-home activation at 4k rpm since computer was disconnected.
5. Re-connected everything and jacked all four wheels off the ground. Started the car and put it in drive. It behaved normally at first, even shifted all the way up. I didn't take it past 60mph due to vibration. Let is coast back down and tried again. This time, it would not spin the wheels fast enough to get a speed indication. I revved the engine up to 4k rpm and 3rd gear (I think) kicked in hard as the tranny entered limp-home mode. All gears were selected on the display as would be expected. The engine died when I turned off the ABS and stepped on the brakes. No coasting-down ability in limp home mode?

What does this tell me? Pump good? Solenoids perhaps? Again, still waiting on VAG-COM cable to arrive.

Default If you disconnect the TCU, the car will be in manual limp mode.

You don't have to rev it to trigger limp mode, it is in limp mode as soon as you turn the ignition on.
It should not die on coast down. You need to vag com it. It sounds like burnt clutches or cracked clutch housing. Reverse is a different clutch pack, that's why you still have reverse.

Default being that i work in a tranny shop and i see this almost everyday

sounds like a combo of two possible things

first you gotta pull the trans. its an internal problem.

if it just didnt get into gear then i would say replace the the 1st gear clutches inside. souds more to me like a. a worn band b. valvebody issue resulting in new solinoids or a combo of the two.

if i were you, i would pull and break down the trans, hot tank the case, buy a rebuild kit, get the solinoids, clean valve body, yada yada yada...

i dunno if this helps, since i have yet to tear into an audi transmission, but all auto trannys are pretty much the same.

Thanks... if VAG-COM doesn't reveal anything new, looks like the manual swap for me.

Audi ( ZF ) transmissions don't have bands, they use clutches for brakes.
