Looking to purchase '96 A6 Avant
I have a friend who currently has no car and now has the opportunity to buy a used '96 A6 wagon with approx. 123,000 miles for roughly $5k. Just wondering if any of you folks here on the A6 board have any advice, caveats, etc. Any common problems with this platform? How are cars from that year holding up these days? Thanks in advance.

I purchased a '96 A6 Avant FWD in 10/96 w/ 4k miles (it was an A of A car)....
I now have ~43K miles (very low mileage for a 7-year old car), but have had very little problems since I purchased it. There was a problem w/ the outside temperature indicator that was replaced under warranty, but other than basic maintenance, no other problems. At 123K miles, your friend should verify that the timing belt maintenance (i.e., timing belt, tensioner, idler roller, water pump/O-ring, & thermostat) was performed @ ~75 - 90K miles. In additon, ensure that the brake fluid, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and coolant were change on regular basis. Those maintenance items are the ones that are most overlooked. I would also expect that the brake pads should have been replaced at least once and probably twice at that mileage. If the current owner (and previous owner(s)) kept the maintenance up, the vehicle should in good shape. You might check its value on Edmunds.com using their True Market Value (TMV) to see if the price is right for the mileage and condition.
