I consider 3,000+ miles per quart acceptable
The Mobil 1 0W-40 meets the Audi VW 502 00 standard. It's on the list. I used to run Mobil 1 15W-50 but someone on this list convinced me the 50 part isn't necessary even in Summer for this engine. And that the 15W part is too thick on engine start. Doesn't allow the oil to circulate quickly when cold.
The zero weight (0W) circulates much better when cold and thus provides good start up lubrication. Also, I happen to run 0W-40 in my A4 1.8T so having common oil around is a convenience. That's my logic.
It would be intersting to find out if any of the Mobil 1 oils failed the VW 502 00 testing. That would eliminate from consideration some bottles found on the store shelf.
I guess I'll experiment next time around. Run 5W-40 over the Summer and see if the consumption is less. I still don't think 3,000+ miles per quart is bad.

That's quite good, especially for synthetic. The Mobil 1 5w-40 is a fave on the 12v forum but...
has been discontinued/replaced by 5w-30 Truck and SUV. I bought a bunch of the old stuff for a couple more oil changes than I have to say bye-bye. Try also the new Pennzoil Platinum 5w-40 Euro Formula, apparently very good.

Some would argue that the 10w bottom end might not protect at start-up so well. But...
if you live in a warm climate like Florida or California you might be ok. I used that grade for one oil change, went to M1 5w-40 Truck SUV and have really liked it. It's now hard to find but you might come across some.

I live in Windsor ,Ontario (Canada). its 83F outside , and humid . I am a crazy driver after 2k-3k I really think I need a oil change . I bought my car a year and half ago from Texas , it has been running on Castrol 5W30 Syn , I switched to 15w50 because I was burning oil badly and added some Lucas oil stabilizer , after 2 month i lowered it down to 10w30 and since then been running 10w30 and no problems , just about a liter of top up between changes .
we have a long winter here and i park outside do i really need to switch to 40 ?
