Default Question for those who know about VAG COM

First, I have a 99 A6 which means I should be int the C5 forum, but I like the clientell here better and vag com should be applicable to C4 and C5

Ok questions:

1. Can some one summarize the difference between 409.1 shareware offered by Ross Tech and the current 512.4 software which is not free?

2. Will the shareware load onto my pc, which runs Windows 2000?

3. What kind of adapter do I need to run the shareware version? Do I need anything else?

Thanks

Default As far as I know, the shareware version will load w/ Win2K. Any of Ross Tech's shareware versions..

will read your DTCs, but won't do much more than that, such as resetting and reading specific channels, reagrdless of the version. For running the shareware version, I believe a generic OBD II connector will work, but you should check Ross Tech's website or contact them directly for further info.

Default there is a version history page on Ross tech's site

the program will run on win2k and most of the aftermarket adapters will work, but you would be better off getting one from Ross

Default A HUGE bargain..just buy Ross tech

Not to sound like a commercial here, but I bought Ross Techs program and adapter back when he was still selling it as a "Beta" program. I can say for certain that the $200 or $300 I spent (it was so long ago I dont remember exactly) has saved me probably $1000+. I look at what it has done for me....
-enabled me to figure out that my EGR valve was bad and replace myself
-figure out that the driver side cat went bad and replaced myself
-countless oil and service warning resets
- 3 trans oil changes (got to have for tran oil temp)
- saved my A$$ one winter in northern WI when the engine wouldnt start..system told me that the crank sensor wasnt working and turned out just to have slipped out a little and needed to rescrew it in...that alone probably saved me $500+
- I know there are others just dont remember now

I keep an old laptop in the back of the car witht the software and cable...ready to go at any time.

SO..just buy it

For all he has done for this community, he should get his $$$
