Remote entry receiver

Remote entry receiver
I have a 1996 A6 and I hate the remote... Buttons are getting worn and the range is poor.
I have a switchblade remote from a newer A6 but it doesn't work with my stock 1996 receiver... Must be different frequency.
Anyone know if I can take a receiver unit from a newer Audi and replace my old receiver? Will the wiring be compatible?
If so, any suggestions on where to find one of these receiver units (1998 or newer) cheap?
Thanks!

I am preparing a technote on what I did with my 1996 A6 ..........
and email it to you as soon as I am done this week... also check Dale Kriestins Tech note under tech on audi world... I did something very similar just with a newer model of Valet 711T which has on board relays....

Not interested in aftermarket though...
...I want a newer Audi receiver so I can use the switchblade key/remote... I would guess that with the Valet model you need to use their separate remote fob, just like I currently have.
Thoughts?

I do not think the old and new receivers are compatible as Audi changed their locking system
a lot since 1996... I think the new one are integrated with the alarm system too... so it might be very expensive for the upgrade... Yes you will get a key FOB when you use the Valet.... but it is Cheap and even better than the New Audi Keyless entry system....

Ya know, it would be really neat if one of the guru's could put out a.....
....narrative on the various locking systems and the year/model Audi that had them. There seems to be a lot of confusion about this, judging from the posts I've seen lately, especially the difference between the old Infra-red system and the newer RF (radio frequency) system(s). Maybe it could go in the Tech site. I don't think there's anything like this there yet (?)

Good idea... I know that my 1996 A6 has an RF system, NOT infra-red.
I just am wondering if anyone knows if the newer RF recievers can be plugged into the same wiring harness as the older RF receivers from 1995-1996???

Summary of Keyless entry systems below.... from my research...
I Think for an A6 the following holds
>1995 Infrared
1996 RF 2 button Remote FCC ID starting with HC....
1997 RF 2 Button remote FCC ID starting with MZ....
1998 - 2002 RF Switch blade FCC ID starting with MZ....
HOWEVER PLEASE DO NOT HOLD ME TO IT... because I read on somebody's post that he had the 1997 and he could add on the switchblade to his car!!!
My guess is then the 1997 was a Transition Year in which they had the SWITCHBLADE AND 2 button remote with the FCC ID of MZ...

I think you're right! 1997 was a transition year...
I've heard the same thing... That the switchblade key remotes work with the 1997 models.
Here's what I have heard:
1996 RF 2 button Remote (very thin remote fob, no Audi logo)
1997 RF 2 Button remote (thicker-style remote fob)
1998 - 2002 RF Switch blade remote/key
I think that Audi switched FCC ID's for 1997, but still had a separate remote. In 1998, they switched to the combo remote/key ("switchblade") but kept the same frequency.
So... I think maybe if I got a receiver from a 1997 A6, it should theoretically work in a 1996 model since very little changed between 1996 and 1997 (same body style, etc.).
Anyone know where I can find a receiver from a 1997 A6?
