Replacing passenger mirror

Replacing passenger mirror
My mirror on my 1997 A6 wagon got side-swiped. The painted shell is fine, but the mirror and the insides are broken. I bought the parts (about $500!), but now I need some help. How do I remove the trim triangle on the inside of the car in order to get to the connection bolts? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ken

Re: Replacing passenger mirror
I've gotten further on this project. I now have the old mirror off, but hanging by its' wire. I now need to remove the inside door panel to get to the wiring.
Could you please explain "removing the door lining." I seem to be having difficulty, and I don't want to break anything.
Thanks,
Ken

Re: Replacing passenger mirror
Sorry, I will try to explain...coming from Germany my English is not the best. I hope you can understand me;-)
With The door lining i ment the door panel. It comes off easily; There are only 5 screws: 2 behind the door handle cover, 2 open screws near the window (one in the front, one in the back of the panel) and the most often forgotten scew is the one behind the "inner door opener" (<- Don´t´know a better word, the thing you have to pull if you want to open the door from inside). If the 5 screws are out, you can push the panel up to remove it from the door. If you done so, the triangle comes off quite easy.
Kind regards,
holg

Re: Replacing passenger mirror
I've now had time to try your procedure. I got the two screws in front and beind the window, but I can't find the other three. How do I remove the door handle cover, and where is the screw behind the inner door opener.
Thanks again,
Ken

Re: Replacing passenger mirror
You can remove the handle cover with a small screwdriver: There is a little hole in the bottom of the handle cover, push the screwdriver in this hole to press a little clip. Then you can pull the cover off the panel; use the screwdriver as a grip to pull. After removing the handle cover, you will see 2 screws. Unscrew them, so you can pull off the whole handle. When the handle is off, you can remove the inner door opener, and behind this there is -a bit hidden- the last screw.

Re: Replacing passenger mirror
success, it's done. Thanks for walking me through the process. One last question, does it matter which way the two plugs on the mirror are connected. I think they are for the heating of the glass.
