Rusted out Fuel Lines

Rusted out Fuel Lines
I have just bought a 1992 100 Cs wagon with less than 90K on the clock. Body is good and undercarriage not bad, but the fuel line is rusted out. I have read most of the posts, and have begun replacement via tube and hose splice technique. Just wondering how extensive this problem is with the Audis, and why they were never forced into a recall if it is a common problem. I am guessing it is a common problem from the posts, as well mine having a hole in both lines at every rubber mounting bracket under the car. I was surprised that there were not complaints in the NHTSA database on this, so I added my $.02 to their complaint files since I just about had a marshmallow roast in my garage.

My '96 A6 doesn't have any rusted out fuel line/supports, even after ~10 years in wet Western WA...
But I keep it garaged year-round. I doubt it is a common problem unless the car has been in the rust-belt for most of its existance and not rinsed down periodically to remove the road "salt" and other freeze preventors in use. In fact, your posting is the first one I've seen re: this issue, but I haven't performed a search.

no rust in michigan
My 92 100 CS with 200K has spent all it's live in Michigan where there is plenty of snow, salt and slop. I've owned it since 95 and the furl lines have no problem at all. On my 86 5K, that is another story, where it was common for them to rust.

Re: no rust in michigan
Thanks for the input. This one was mainly a Chicago area car, so it has seen the salt and snow as well. The majority of the line itself is just rusty on the surface, but at every mounting point on the underbody, there is a hole in the lines. Initially, it was leeking around one mounting point, but when I undid the rubber mounts to replace the section, I noticed both the supply and return lines had holes rusted in them in the rubber mounts. It appears that they rust due to water etc. sitting in the rubber mounts, and you don't see the leek until the mounts are loose or removed.

Re: replaced all the lines on my 90
I thought that it had to be more than just my car. Every place that it mounts to the body, there is a rust out. I replaced the initial leak section, and that just made it leak at another mounting point. Looks like the only fix is to replace the entire line up to the negine compartment. I am just suprised that Audi did not end up replacing these due to the safety issue involved. Thanks for your info, as it makes me at least know that I am not the only one.
