Default Should I even consider a CD changer that is wired into the FM antenna?

I went to Circuit City for some PS2 games and wandered into the audio section... I found out I can hook up a cd changer without having it work thru the front deck.. but a seperate little one that attaches to anything.. and the cd changer would run through the antenna, believe that's what he said... there would be no wiring into the front deck.. should I even consider this.. or is this going to mess up my car?
Thanks.. - Jessica

Default in my opinion

Id say dont even bother. The fm-band cdchanger sucks. i have heard this from numerous audio experts/enthusiasts. Its a waist of time and money. Buing the factory changer would be great if you could get one for a reasonable price. I got quoted $600 for changer without installation. (Classic Audi) You could also try finding one secondhand for a good price. So what id recommend is get a whole new system. The bose system isnt all taht bad but it lacks real bass. It fades out when you turn up the radio. And yeah...you want to play cd's sometime or another. i changed out the bose speakers for polks top of the line and added two amps. 600x4 for the four cabin speakers and a 500x2 to run the two 12inch subs. The subs arent really neccesary but i wanted really good sound. I am so happy with it i almost hate the old system(bose). try looking at good speakers and a good headunit.

Only an opinion

Default from other point you will get 80% of the friquency band for 40% of the price

If you look for cheap solution, I would opt for MP3 player with FM or tape adaptor. And you can tape MP3 player with you.

Default I could see an MP3 because I think it's portable hence easily removed. She has a 96, little too soon

for non matching stereo gear and poor sound especially if she wants to sell it soon.

Don't the MP3 players have an adaptor that just plugs into the cassette?

Some guy did a big stereo upgrade on the A6 board. Alhough it was a professional install and the workmanship looks good the silver / blue faces and non red lights on the stereo gear look pretty cheesy to me.

I looked at upgrades, only head unit I saw that looked good to me was an old Blapunkt you probably can't buy anymore.

i use one. it is fine for a car. the acoustics in a car are not the optimum place to hear music. too much glass.

it sounds as good as the best FM station you can receive. maybe better. it is certainly better then any tape you will play. you also don't end up tearing everthing apart to install it.

i have a panasonic 8 disc changer. mounted in the factory bracket. the controler sits under the ashtray. took me about 45 mintues to install it. just depends how picky your are i guess.

FYI. A 96 Audi is prewired for a CD changer. No "tearing apart" involved if I read you post right.
