You may see that this engine needs more space than the 2.8L 12 valve engine. What you don't see is that the C5 chassis is built around this 30valve engine. So, the front frame, subframe and suspension are completely different that on the C4 chassis.
That is why it would be too expensive to swap this 1999 Audi 2.8L 30 valve engine in to an old Audi 100 with C4 chassis.
BTW, you could buy a C4 audi with the 2,8l 30V engine in europe in 1996. So regarding space there should actually not be that big issues. Electrically its an another story, due to the fact that the amount of produced cars was very limited so you probably would have to use wiring harness etc from a newer bodied car. There was a front wheel drive automatic 30V audi C4 dismantled close to where i live some while ago- the engine with harness ECU etc would hav been 1500 dollars- i was very close to take this as a project (fitting it into a 93 100 quattro)

If you were to swap the 2.8 30V with it's ECU, then how would the new ECU communicate with the existing TCU and the instrument cluster? Any such swap will require careful planning, research and effort. The wiring diagrams are in the BentleyPublishers.com manual. The software in the new ECU may not be compatable with that of the existing TCU and instrument cluster. Hence, you may be unable to get proper communication between the modules.
It would be cheaper to just buy a used Audi Allroad, with a 2.7T.

In cars this old the communication between the different units is very limited and simple. Because the combo has been available from the factory and looking at factory wiring diagrams the wiring is not a big issue. The instrument cluster is "stupid" and does not include any anti theft-functionalities etc as in the newer cars. The basic communication out from the ECU to other systems is a speed signal, fuel consumption and engine speed. Input from other units is mainly from the AC (compressor on/off). Instrument cluster, ac-unit, abs-system etc is the same for 12V and 30V engines in the C4. Of course You need to have knowledge about what you are doing (as always when swapping to another engine) but this is not at all more difficult than for example swapping a AAN (2,2T) engine into a C4. And all the basic info needed is readily available
Of course then the most popular swap over here is using the 2,7T engine instead of the 12V engine. In this swap the major difficulty is getting it legal due to huge hp increase (typical engine is from a "new" S4 with 320 bhp)

With prices of cars in Europe (tax and more tax and then tax on tax) we are talking of totally different money buying an allroad 2,7t or doing an engine swap on an old 100.

Here is also a picture of a nice engine swap- a 4,2 liter 290 bhp AEC engine was swapped to a newer model 4,2 300 bhp V8 (to avoid problems with the Nikasil-lining of the older engines cylinders)This included some heavy modifications due to the changed construction of the engine block.
