VAG-COM arrived today, here's what I got on my tranny.
Without the engine running, the only code it came up with was:
00526 - Brake Light Switch-F
29-00 - Short to Ground
I then started the engine and revved it high enough to engage 3rd gear and kill the engine as well as activate limp-home mode indicated by the gear select indicator. I got the following code:
00652 - Gear Monitoring
16-00 - Signal Outside Specifications
Unless the brake light switch 'short to ground' could cause this problem, looks like I'll be getting a manual to swap in. Any ideas from what came up?

Check the switch. It can couse tranny problems.
If the switch is broken ( short to ground ) the TC is open all the time. If they drove it for a long time with the broken switch it could damage the tranny. If the TC is open on the hwy, it will overheat the tranny, burn the clutch in the TC ( black tranny fluid ) bad fluid will burn the clutches in the tranny.
Normal tranny temperature is 185F, Fluid is good for 100K miles. Every 15% temperature increase will reduce the fluid life by 50%( 200F=50K, 215=35K, 230=12.5K....... . If it goes over 300F it will die in minutes.

Brake light switch DTC is always there until you press the brake pedal. Re: DTC 00652,...
the Bentley Manual lists several possible causes:
* Incorrect TCM installed
* Incorrect ABS control module -J104- installed
* Open circuit or short circuit between TCM and ABS control module
* ABS Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) lights up
* As least two wheel speed sensors malfunctioning
* Multi-function TR switch -F125- out of adjustment or malfunctioning.
Based on the DTC, I doubt you need to replace the complete tranny.

I doubt the wrong TCM or ABS computers have been installed.
And an open or short circuit between the TCM and ABS control module shouldn't cause a complete free-revving no-move situation, right? The ABS light did not come on. When I was testing the transmission with all four wheels off the ground, the light did come on as the speed was increased, but the transmission did shift properly, there's just no 'force' behind it. If remedying the cause of this code would fix the transmission, where do I start? I'm not sure if you've seen my other posts about this issue and are aware of the symptoms. If you still think the tranny doesn't need to be replaced, please let me know what to do.

I haven't purchased the license. Not sure I'm ready to spend $100 to find out I need swap the tranny
You know of a way to get VAG-COM to perform the output tests without paying the $100 for a license?
