Hey, I was looking at that one
I was interested in that one too, but I never bid on it. My budget was higher, and boy did I score (I think).
1997 Avant Quattro, tornado red, 81k miles, one owner!, and it is in every way the "old lady just drove around town" car. Absolutely immaculate interior, and fantastic shape body and paint. Won it on Ebay for $6350 and took the train to PA yesterday to pick it up. You may have seen it but I'm too lazy to get the link just now. I can't find any other fault or broken items. Although my temp gauge and gear indicator on the dash isn't lit at night, but I don't know if they're supposed to be. Even came with full manual package and all original keys/fobs.
Only thing wrong - the front struts are shot and I bounced the whole way home. But I expected that and its an easy fix. I'll plan on the timing belt soon. I have a question on that I can't find anywhere and will have to post.
As for your new '96, good luck. Since I assume your in NE like me, let me know if you have a repair shop in Mass for good timing belt prices.

I'm in NYS. Yeah you can get a great A6 with that budget, I went through many before this one.
I just need a second car so I got whatever I could. Some A6s were going for $9k with like 140K miles, crazy.
