As with any Audi, by the end of the model run they worked most of the kinks out...
...so '98 avants would be the most refined.
If they're anything like the '95 90s (haven't looked at '97/'98 avant parts listings), they continued updating parts up to the very last of them made (as some of the latest of the VINs have parts specific only to them). It's Audi's way...they continue to perfect them until the very end.

A brief summary for the various MMS (from my Audi MMS Self-Study Program book)....
The Hitachi Multi Port Fuel Injection (MPI) system was introduced in 1992 as the MMS 100/200 with the 2.8L V6 12V engine in the new 100 model (C4 platform). Here is what was introduced:
MMS 100/200 (1992)
* Distributorless ignition system
* New style Bosch injectors
* solenoid valve for intake manifold change-over valve
* EGR for 50 states
* Single valve for fuel tank ventilation
* Hot-wire Hitachi MAF
MMS 300/311 (1993)
* Modified MPI engine management system
* Full adpative O2 sensor control
* Removed CO adjustment potentiometer
* Expand diagnostics capcity w/ VAG 1551
* Reloacted EGR temp sensor
* Eliminated intake air pre-heat
MMS 400/411 (Model Year 1996)
* OBD-II compliant
* Heated O2 sensors behind 3-way cats
* Added EVAP canister sensor
* New 16-pin data link connector (DLC) mounted in driver's compartment
* New MPI Control unit w/ 96 pins/5 individual harness connectors
* Diagnostics can be performed w/ VAG 1551 scan tool
* Secondary air injection (MMS 411)
* Added Leak Detection Pump (LDP) V144 (MMS 411)
Don't have pics for the various alloy wheels. My '96 has the rounded, recessed-from-edge 8-spoke alloy wheels. I know that the '97s had the flat spoke allow wheels that were not recessed from the wheel edge.
