About the "BAR" oil pressure indicator.
Well, I was wondering if any of you folks could help my lack of knowledge about what is the typical good read from the BAR gauge. Mine semms to live and fluctuate between 1 thru 4 depending on idling or highway speeds, which I'm thinking is a good thing. However my Haynes does not clearly tell me what is the good running reads. Anyone know?

Re: About the "BAR" oil pressure indicator.
I think mine (before the catastrophic oil leak and engine disentregation) was about 1.5 bar at idle and 4-5 at highway speeds after the oil temp was up.
My 944 on the other hand, has about 3bar at idle. Both run xW-40 weight oil.
(I used to run 10w40 in all the cars. I then switched the 4ks over to synthetic and have been running Synpower 5w40. I think the pressure at idle dropped a bit with synthetic.)

Mine runs at about the same. 1.5 at idle and 5 while driving. I sort of remember reading somewhere that the oil light comes on if the pressure drops below 1.
BTW, I use 20W50 oil.

Thanks! How 'bout another BAR question...
What does BAR stand for? I know that I'm really showing my ignorance here, but have been trying to figure it out for a bit now. I keep searching my "Deutsch", but....
The only time my BAR reaches 5 on the scale is when the car is warming up on a cold morning.... @ 80mph I'm reading the BAR only around 4 or a bit over. Does this seem regular to you?

Re: Thanks! How 'bout another BAR question...
Bar doesn't really stand for anything, its a unit of pressure but it comes from the word barometric. 1 bar is almost identical to 1 atm (atmospheric pressure) which is the equivelant of 14.7 psi (pounds per square inch) or 760 torr which is also equal to approximately 760 mm Hg (millimeters mercury). These are about the only units of pressure you'll ever see. And if you haven't take physics or chemistry yet, you'll learn them soon.

I guess I was thinking something else entirely.
I work with barometric pressures & atmos daily...here in UNC ... but had not related the Baro term to the oil pressure. Thanks for clearing this up for me.
What about the operating reads... do the values I stated in earlier thread seem OK?

My '82 stays pegged at anything above 1500 RPM, and never drops below 2 when it's hot & idling. Actually, it stays about 3 at idle until the filter starts getting dirty. (That's how I gage oil change time since my odometer no workee)My '83 is about what you said you have, and I've heard that's still OK. Not supposed to drop below 1.5 at idle when hot.
