Alternator bracket confusion _different brackets available?
Hey all,
Hope someone can tell me what the situation is with the alternator brackets that mounted the alt on the drivers (thermostat) side the 5 cylinders? As far as I know, this was only the 4000's, right?
I pulled a bracket of a car at the junkyard that was a 4000, because I need to move the alternator on my 2.3 NF to the drivers side. The bracket has matching bolt holes with the block, and it seems like it will fit fine. So, I started looking into what alternator I could use. The thing is, the numbers on this bracket don't match ETKA - my bracket is 034 903 143D. As far as I can tell, ETKA indicates the 4000Q with a 034 903 141J. AND, this bracket has the toothed adjuster arm on the top side. This appears to be different from other 4000 brackets I can find pictures of, as well as that on ETKA.
Were there different alt brackets on the 4000? What models have what? Is this even an alt bracket I have?
Also, I really need to have more than 90 Amps, did any drivers side equipped cars have larger alts?
Thanks!
Nathaniel

I have seen two different mountings on a 4kq...
Both the toothed bracket, and the 'Y' bracket with the long slots.
Don't know how you can tell which one you are 'supposed' to get. By year of car? By build month? Who knows...???

A little grinding and spacing...
and i got a 230+ amp GM CS-130 (larger of the two common 80s to 90s GM alt's, though the output was totally custom) alternator on my toothed adjuster bracket. It's been six months, so I don't remember all the specifics of getting it to fit, but I can sure look. Replacing the "toothed" part of the bracket with something costum would be much better. Let me know if you want more info on the subject.

Re: different brackets available?
<center><img src="http://4ktq.digitalnoise.org/5/lines.jpg"></center><p>Yes, the "Y" bracket" and the "Toothed" brackets appear on ETKA.
However, As I mentioned, the bracket I have has the toothed bracket *on top* as opposed to on the bottom like the picture I hope I attached here
So, there seem to be two different styles altogether. Unless, my bracket belongs to something else entirely! Anyone know?
Thanks for the large amp alt set up, though, I was only looking to get a 110 amp - I'm not doing any welding!

Doh!
Oops, seems that the bracket I have belongs to an 80, not a 4000!
I guess I should put notes on the parts I pull since I don't see some again for months!
Ok then.. on your way, nothing here to see....

Yep 84/85 4KQs and CGTs are diff from 86/87s
two different brackets, two different alternator models. 4KQs and CGTs share the same for those years. SO the question becomes, get a new bracket or a new alternator :-)
