Default Any BTDT's on fitting B4 90 quattro seats in my 4kq?

I recently picked up some 90 quattro front seats for my 4kq. I had the derelict 200 wagon sitting at my gf's parents house for far too long and they were getting pretty pissed. I worked a deal with a local Audi junkyard to trade the rolling hulk of the 200 w/ towing for the seats and some trim pieces. Motor had already been yanked along with any parts I cared to save or sell. Plus it made the parents happy so all in all it was a good deal for me.

My 4kq dd has platinum grey leather interior and the front seats have split seams and broken down butt bolsters. I figured my chances of finding matching front seats in great shape are pretty slim so retrofitting newer seats would be my primary option.

First issue is that the wrecking yard picks the cars up by ramming a forklift through the front window and stacking them on top of one another. The hit the headrests with the forklift blades and bent the metal bars. I have checked the bar spacing and it's approximately 10.25" on the 4kq and 90 seats. I was planning on using the head rests from my 4kq anyways since they have a black stripe to match the door cards and the 90 headrests don't. I have tried pulling on the head rests and they are not coming out of the seats. Does anyone know the procedure for removing the head rests or is it just pull real hard?

These seats are heated and the drivers is 8 or 10 way power adjustable. Modifications for starters will be narrowing the rear sliders to the correct width for the 4kq. I will also need to cut out the center front mount on the drivers side 4kq floor and weld in mounts for the 90 seat. Looks like the passenger seat will fit in the 4kq center front mount but I would like a confirmation on that if anyone knows for sure. Below are photos of the wiring for the seats. Anyone who has done this swap with input on wiring, please share the details. I do not have a 90 service manual so I need to figure out what wires are for what.

I had posted an ad on Audifans looking for the seat heater controls for 4kq and got one response so far from a helpful someone on this forum. Does anyone know if the wiring harnesses on the cars are somewhat universal? As in, even though my car came without seat heaters, is the wiring in place for them? I think I have seen a mention of seat heaters on the fuse box lid and I know there are some empty relay sockets with bridges making connections in there. Hopefully I'm lucky enough and some of this will be plug and play.

If I can't get all of the required bits for the 4kq seat heater controls, I have the switches, wiring, and the mounting bracket from the 200 wagon. The switches are 1.75" tall and 1" wide. The center fresh air vents are 1.75" tall by 3" wide. Looks like a little three switch cluster could be retrofitted into on of the sockets for the vents. Of course, I would much prefer the 4kq stuff and will be pursuing that route first.

Default A couple of answers>>>

I'd go back to the J-yard and get the seat mounting rails. This will simplify your install by a bunch!

As far as removing the headrests, It looks like you'll have tot put some real muscle on those bent rests. IMHO, you going to have to be real careful not to damage the tops of the seats.

Good photos, by the way! good luck with that... hope you have a easier time with it than I did w/ the A6 seating I tried to install. At least your car has the wiring in it for motors and heated.

I don't think I will need the guide rails for the seats. They have a plastic guide on the rear seat mounts that visually looks to be the same as 4kq seats. I will need to pull down one of my spare 4kq seats to get a confirmation on that.

I am worried about damaging the seat tops when removing the head rests. I have tried pulling fairly hard but without ever removing un-bent ones, I don't know how much force it's supposed to take. I have felt around the post areas on the new seats by squishing the foam from front and back and can't find any evidence of the posts deflecting inside the seats. I'm guessing that since the posts already have a pretty sharp bend from the factory that the material failed at that point mostly outside of the seat. We'll see how it turns out I guess.

Regarding the wiring, I don't think there is wiring for motors since I have never seen a 4kq with factory power seats. I hope it has the wiring for the heaters but I was more looking for a confirmation that it's there before I tear apart the dash looking for it. I also want to have the seats modified to fit the car before I start in on the wiring. I can always drive w/o power functions and heaters but I don't want to drive with the dash/wiring torn apart.

Default There was a guy who used to post here- Jason. He did the same thing

Put black 90 seats in his car. I seem to remember that he had to do some welding in order to get all done right. good luck!

Default A couple more answers....

You appear to have done a little research, which definately helps.

The headrests have a clip that is in the plastic at the top. I usually pull it with a small 90degree pick. One side has a loop. you will see it when looking closely. However, from the pics, the drivers seat appears to be damaged below the mounting point of the headrest. The posts for the headrest are definately one of the strongest on the seat. (I know, I know, you didn't want to hear that)

As for the headrests, they are much like any other Audi option for that time. You will need the entire wiring harness for that option, but other than that, it's plug and play. IOW, if you unplug the harness for heated seats in a 5000TQ, it will plug back into your 4000 or Coupe fusebox (assuming the sater style fusebox). But, there is no wiring other the fusebox being prepped. The dash trip computer is the same way. As are the power mirrors. And, probably other options I'm not thinking of right now.

That lever on the passenger seat is for height adjustment, just like on the side of the drivers 4000 seat. However, it adjusts the height of the entire seat, not just the rear.

When planning the passenger seat rail modifications, make sure you plan for the offset of the center rail. IOW, if you adjust one of the rear rails, but don't keep it centered, the seat will **** to tone side as it moves forward.

Tony

BTW, if you do end up needing new seat frames for the fronts, I have a pretty rough set that have good frames. Hipe the others aren't damaged, though. It's not terribly easy to pull apart and redo them. However, it's not impossible, either. I have pics of one I took appart a while ago. If I can find them, I was planning on writing up an article for the Audifans KB.

Default I originally wanted to use the sport seats from my 200 wagon...

I was concerned they would be a bit too big for the car. Plus, the leather was in slightly worse shape than my 4kq seats so they would need to be redone. They sure are nice to sit it though. Do you have any conflict between the seat controls and the map pocket? I was worried about that with the 200 seats since they are so wide and then the controls are even wider.

On the subject of welding, I grew up around welding & fab work since I was a wee lad. I have been welding (recreationally) for around 13 years and I work in a metal shop with unlimited access to welders, milling machine, pressbrakes, cnc lasers, waterjets, and a router. So in other words, I have an unfair advantage when it comes to modifying the seats and my car to make them fit.

Default OT But I will have a set of the same seats in mint condition available..

in a month or so. Gray leather all power + heated from my 20v Q (under 80k miles). No rips, smudges, cracks, anything. Replacing them with lighter alternatives.

Word to the wise the seats weigh a substantial amount more then the manually adjusted ones so if your looking to stay thin, looks elsewhere.

Default I know it will add some weight but only the drivers side is power...

Plus I have a really screwed up neck and back from bike and car crashes. I think the ability to fine tune the position of the power seat and the seat heaters will be bennefical to me. And I am sick of sitting on the metal bar that was once inside the LH foam butt bolster on my drivers seat.
