Default Anyone following the big oil debate?

I haven't seen anything here about it so I thought I would ask.

I have a buddy that is a mechanic for a local guy with a bunch of rare vehicles. Anyways, he was telling me that the oil on the shelves now is killing all engines. He told me that I should use Shell Rotella-T in all of my engines.

He said that the lovely government I guess has had the oil companies take out zinc and phosphorus out of the oil. Those 2 things are crucial to metal on metal friction and without them camshafts go flat. I guess they'd rather have engines die instead of cat converters.

I did some research the other night and I came up with a couple of links.

Anyways, just wanted to bring this up since I haven't seen this topic on the 4000 board.

I may sound like a raving weirdo here so let me know what you've heard about the oil. I'm here to learn.

Default VERY interesting. The second link doesn't seem to work...

did you copy the article by chance? If so could you post it?

I'm in the middle of a 10VT build and would hate to see the motor go belly up after 900 miles!

Default Use a synthetic if you're concerned

One with a di-ester base stock should be dandy. The are more likely to use an amine anti-wear additve.

BUT...THINK! How many miles on your engine and it the cam worn out? More likely than not IF it is, it's due to improper maintenance. You've got diesel trucks out there with hundreds of thousands of miles on the clock and they're still going strong.

Your car will die from something else before the engine "wears out". Much worse than low K in the oil is dirt and soot. Keep your oil changed and the motor will last your lifetime.

Wear additives in oil

Default Yes

But after that any good SFI properly spec'd oil is fine. As long as you follow a good maintenance schedule your motor will last a good long time.

The things that cause motor oil to "go bad".

Particulate contaminants - soot, dirt, metal
Volatile contaminants - gas
Produced contaminants - acid
Excess heat - emission of low boiling constituents, then further viscosity breakdown

All but the heat aspect can be mitigated by proper oil change intervals.
