Bad gas, update: I win! :)
Recap: 86 4kq would start fine then immediately stall.
I'd got to a point where the next test in the bently was to check the return line volume out of the lower chamber of the fuel distributor, and that looked like a real PITA- it's a hard line and there's no space and it was all rusty, ugh. So I skipped that and went to the next test, checking the differential pressure regulator resistance. It was out of spec, so I popped it off (two screws, took about 1 minute ) and then did the same on my '87, and installed the DPR from the '87 on the '86 and gave it a go- damn thing started right up. I drove it around for 20 minutes and never had a hiccup, proving again that two audis are better than one!

Re: that is on or close to the airflow meter / fuel dist, right?
Heavy little elec component fastened to the fuel dist with two silver screws. Probably pretty spendy from the stealer, I'll get one used. (it's a beater!)
