Thanks for thinking of me! I'm thinking about it....
If I were to pick it up, I'd do it up right with a good quality paint job.
What I DO like about it:
Older and unusual (these days)
Funky interior cloth
Funky 1980 only 2 tone dash/panels (tan and brown)
1980 and '81 only large clock in the place of the tach.
It is old enough to be registered as an antique, which costs very little to insure.
It would look pretty cool parked next to my '84, which, although of the same era, has a different look to it.
What I DON'T like about it:
It isn't very exciting
Brown.
LOTS of undercoating (and the description touts the fresh undercoating as a selling point!?!)
1.6 liters of putt...putt...putt...I'm not a performance freak, but these smaller, pre-VW GTI motors not only have less power, but get less miles per gallon (in my experience) because they are underpowered.
We'll see. I do body work, but I leave the painting to the pros. A GOOD paint job costs a minimum of $2000 (even that's if you know somebody), so I'm never in a hurry to JUMP into a project, especially if it isn't something interesting.
There IS something else up for auction right now that I'm MUCH more interested in...

By the way....

Lately I've been thinking about buying a Coupe' S and having it imported. I've spoken to someone who has done it, and if I remember correctly, it costs about $2000 to get it here (the importer takes care of all of the paperwork).
Now THAT would be unique over here!

Re: Sure that's an original 1980 4000?
I drove one for a long time..........
That one looks relly nice, but the 5+5 was the only way AFAIK to get a 5 speed. I forget if the "E" was a 5 speed on not.
Ours was a 1.6L? with a 4 speed stick.
The engine in that photo looks like a 4 cyl.
The flash on the stick shift makes it hard to tell 4 or 5 speed.
The door cards were MUCH simpler,so I suspect the interior is swapped from an 1984 4000S
Mine was white with blue and it was a decent ride. If the color wasn't brown I'd entertain the thought of it.
Good luck!

Likely original. I had an '80 with that interior. It may be the 4E (5 speed) of that period.
In '81 Audi used the same interior cloth pattern, but the seat backs weren't vinyl- they switched over to cloth. What is in the car is 1980.
