When the temp gets up around 3/4 of maximum, the cooling fan comes on(that's good). Trouble is, it only stays on for 20-30 seconds then shuts off. I doubt the rad cools down in that amount of time !! Is there a relay that controls the run time of the cooling fan ?

Sounds normal to me,, expect it to be longer in warmer temperatures

There is a relay for the fan (in fuse box on my car) - but i think it is switched on and off by a temp sensor - maybe one in the radiator itself.

... isn't so great as to require a greater running time. It isn't intended to stay on until the temp gauge reads horizontal.
