Default Coupe GT Questions

I have the itch for a project car again (done quite a few in the past, rebuilt an E30 and an Mk1 MR2) and really like the classic lines of the Coupe GT, poking around on the various classified sites I am amazed at how cheaply clean examples sell for.

Is the 10v/20v turbo swap a "bolt-in" affair, or does it require machining of brackets, motors mounts etc?

Are there many after market parts available for it, namely suspension upgrages, sway bars, etc

Can a quattro swap from a 4000 be performed?

Are differentials available? I would imagine turbo power needs a LSD up front so that its not a torque steering one wheel monster.

While I am generally not a huge fan of FWD, I think with the right car and set up it can be a lot of fun when the road gets twisty Do these cars respond well to suspension/handling mods? I realize with the modest stock power they are not going to set any records, but it would be fun to have one handle like its on rails.

I've had lots of different cars ranging from a Miata, Corvette, MR2, E30, I've had two B5 A4s, an Impreza, 318ti and many more, currently driving an 05 Jetta TDI.

I've always lusted for a classic Audi and the CGT seems to fit what I am looking for.

Thanks!

turning this into a quattro from what i've read is not worth it. Find a decent ur Quattro and then drop a 20v if you need Quattro. Swap a MC1 or 2 and upgrade the suspension and brakes would be a killer start. These motors you can get cheap. I just bought one but Ill only mildly mod it keep the motor stock. these guys have upgrades and im sure they're others. Search the MC1/2 swap and you'll find tons of info. Lots of skilled mechanics on these sites.

As far as converting to quattro, this site shows what is involved.
http://kvquattro.com/cq_conversion.html
Basically you need to swap the entire underside of the 4000q, including floors and front bulkhead.

As for a turbo swap, the 20vt is nice but hard to find a cheap one
The MB1/2 however are widely available and cheap.
(I picked up a high milage MB1 with a complete 5000tq wrapped around it for 300)

For parts, 2bennett as in the above post, also http://www.034motorsport.com/

034 has alot of the parts req'd for the 10vt swap, including the urQ downpipe and bent tie rod

http://www.gtquattro.com/GTCTurbo.html
This guy has done the 10vt swap and goes over some of what is involved

Anyways good luck and keep us updated if you go through with the project

Didnt see this the first time through.

There is a Quaife diff available and it goes for about 1500
The Quaife lists the same diff for both the CGT and the Porsche 944, so i'm not sure if any 944 diff would work but its certainly something you'd want to look into with a turbo

CGT's are very upgradeable, but you are limited in selection of who makes what so parts can be pricey (relatively speaking). That said with money spent in the right areas you can do alot with these cars and they respond well to it in both power & handling.

I've got a MC1 10vt swap in mine with 2B chip, 2.5" exhaust, & K24 turbo making around 220-230hp. Woke my car up considerably from the stock 100hp it came with. It's also fitted with 2B Koni/Eibach coilovers, 2B delrin bushings, Blau rear sway bar, 4KQ front sway bar, Jamex upper strut bar, Quaife diff (and yes it's the same as a Porsche 944 unit), Wilwood Dynalite II brakes w/11" Brembo rotors, etc.

Also fitted Recaro Trend seats, late model dash swap, Euro head & tail lights, & Kamei X1 body kit (plus a few other mods...).

So yeah, there's quite a bit that can be done with a CGT if your so inclined. Check out some of my pics below if you want some ideas.
