Default Do Bosch 83 - 1995 alternators tend to undercharge the battery.?

I've had several cars since '92 when i got my schumucker automatic battery charger and began using it on my 83CGT. At the time if I'd try to top up the battery on my 84 crown vic - the green 'fully charged' light would go on in 10 minutes but for the Audi it was always at least an hour. Back then I thought the Audi alt was on the way out but i got a brand new 95 Volvo with Bosch and it was like the Audi - topping up the battery took a long while. 89 Dodge Aires of all things would always top up in 10 minutes despite short trips. 2000 Subaru - quick top up. Last purchase 83 URQ and that needs to charge for a while to get the green light. I tend to 'battery charge' my Bosch alternate cars every other week as they seem to need it. I even have a new battery charger, wore the 1st one out. That 83CGT still has the same alt. Oh - I have a battery/alt tester (voltage) and if i put on the hi-beams and fan as per instructions the Bosch alternators fall into the 'weak' area of the scale.

Default There were different amp alternators floating around for Audi mdls....

I forget which one fit which cars, but there were typically a 90, 110 and a 115 (correct me if Im wrong). That 90 amp alternator could barely keep up with the electrical draw that the car had. What you're experiencing sounds pretty typical

Default All Bosch regulators are not the same..

According to Huw's alternator page, not all Bosch voltage regulators are designed to work at the same voltage.

If your Bosch regulators are at the lower end of a battery chanring range, that could explain why those batteries nned more chargign than others..

Regardless, Huw's Audi alternator page is an interesting read..<ul><li><a href="http://www.humanspeakers.com/audi/alternator.htm">Huw's Audi alternator page</a></li></ul>
