Default filling car with gas, pump stops

I've been annoyed by the fact that when filling my '87q up with gas the pump constantly stops. I had come to accept it and just put the filler nozzle 3/4 to 1/2 way in and partially squeezing it until last week.

As I pulled in to get gas last Thursday I popped the hood and traced down the vent line for the gas tank in the void where my battery used to live. I disconnected the line and proceeded to fill the tank with nozzle all the way in and at full squeeze on the trigger. reconnected the vent, closed the hood and off I went.

Now last night I had to re-fuel the car. just to prove my point I didn't unplug the vent line last night and tired the same full in and full squeeze to no avail. just squeeze click, squeeze click, and so on.

thoughts?

Try putting the nozzle in upside down? Maybe just a urban rumor but I have heard it works.

Used to do that with my '87 4kq and it worked really well actually. I think it also worked if you had it 90 degrees to the side.

I vaguely remember doing this 90 degree filling in the past. I'll give that a try at the next fill up

90° worked great for me although annoying since you can't walk away or let go. Someone had posted on here quite a while back about a fix for this issue. There was some kind of inline check valve in the trunk behind the liner that causes this problem when it goes bad. Try searching the archives.

Yup.... upside down for me. Easier to hold once it is inverted rather than sideways.

I'll look into that tho I don't think it's an issue because I disconnected the vent by the airbox as it heads into charcoal canister hoses

Default JUst don't put the nozzle in so far... my '84 would do that>>>

and the cure for that was to put it in only just far enough to not stop the flow.

Seeing how an '03 A4 and '84 4000 have very little in common I'd search/ask on the right forum...
