Default ughhhhh.... there goes the dog teeth, there's a reason the trans came with a clutch...

there's HUGE stress on the synchros and dog teeth if they're not matched PERFECTLY without the clutch.
There's only a whimpy spring loaded brass ring between you and Mr. dog teeth!
Furthermore, the only wear on the clutch is on the throwout bearing, only slipping the clutch causes wear, which is usualy only done in 1st from a stop!
Racing trans don't have synchros, they have dog rings (like a motocycle trans), they're much stronger and are designed to take a beating from shifting without a clutch AND they're rebuilt every couple of thousand miles....

Default Clutch, what's a clutch? :P

Currently rocking the autobox twins. Would love to convert the diesel to manual, a big project for another day . .

Default hey tony, your a mechanic, does shifting without (when done properly) hurt anything?

i don't see why it would. again, if done properly. there is nothing grinding and the tranny mches up to shift ata certain rpm. i don't see what it could be hurting.

please correct me if i'm wrong.

Default actually there would be wear on the pressure plate as well. when done right, the syncros have to....

be proper lined up or you get a grind or rub. when done properly, the synchros are allinged, and thus no wear, or tear on the tranny. it's important to point out that you do have to be skilled at it to do it properly, but once learned, there should not be a problem. the tranny just slips into gear.

if you are really working the engine and athigher rev's, you shouldn't do it. but at lower sight driveing speeds, it should be fine.

by the way, have you tried shifting a motorcycle without the clutch? that is really a learned art. i will never do that.

we'll have to get a tranny mechanic involved to see if it really does cause damage to the synchros. i'm curious to know if i'm an idiot or not. : )

Default Wow I've never tried this in a car before! But do it all the time on my motorcycle.

Funny you said that about doing it on a bike. I didn't even know my cars would shift without using the clutch lol!

i think it's easier on a car than on a motorcycle. but it does work on both. : )
