Default Got your thinking caps on this morning? I need help.

I drove my '84 4ksq to Chicago Thursday, no problems. Drove it Saturday, again, no problems. Disconnected the battery, as I always do, because of the random power drain that I haven't taken time to figure out (it's cold out, and I have no garage). I hop in the car this morning to head home. It won't start. It cranks. The fuel pump accumulates pressure. There is spark from the distributor. After cranking, I smell fuel. But it won't start.

It's parked on a street in chicago, and my girlfriend doesn't own any tools to speak of, and I left everything at home (it's been running great, so I didn't think I would need anything). Does anyone have any thoughts, or is anyone in the uptown neighborhood of Chicago, and maybe wants to help a fellow 4kq owner out?

There is condensation on the engine - it's cold and damp outside right now. But that's never been an issue for me in the past.

Just a wild guess. Pull the distributer cap off and check for condensation under it. This could cause the spark to short.

Default ^Agree, check it!Had an issue w/mine not starting, not moisture, but the cap was the root cause

Fuel delivery was fine
Starter was fine
Battery was cool in the gang
Had spark in all cylinders (but it was intermittent-didn't catch it)
Spare fuse was in

Then for ****s and grins, AudiSport4000, Mike, pulled the cap....walla! There was the problem-bad part.

GOOD LUCK! (I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya!)

Default 3rd, if you have that black plastic cover over your dist cap THROW IT AWAY.

that f'n black cap over the cap caused me more trouble... on 2 different audis. also, a can of WD-40 works wonders on displacing the water in there just to get you home... always carry a small can.

Default dried it out, no good. I think my friend has a spare distro, so I'll try that when I can.

Until then, my girlfriend will be pushing my car up and down her street until I come back to chicago:/

Default Coolant temp senders

If these get even remotely wet on my CGT, she won't even think of starting. Theres one on the bottom of the fitting where the upper rad hode meets the head and another on the back (firewall side) of the head. Check that your connections are dry, and that you have good grounds to the motor.

Cheers, Dan
