Hard start '86 CGT
For the past few days my CGT has not been starting on the first try after sitting awhile. Turn the key and the idiot lights come on but nothing else...won't turn over..total silence. Has always started on the second turn of the key. I'm thinking that maybe the battery is getting weak but could it be a worn ignition switch or the like?
Thanks,
John

Starter Test Point
Audi has given us a handy starter 'test point'.
On the higer end cars (5000 and such), there is an 'anti theft' relay, that has to turn on to enable starting.
On the 4k/coupes, that relay is not present (But I think it's still indicated on the relay chart under the fusebox cover)
It's the position with that brass 'Z' strip jumpering the terminals together.
Why is that handy? Becuase the brass terminal is electrically in between the ign switch and the starter.
So.. Next time it doesn't want to start, apply 12V to the Z strip. That's the same as turning the key to 'crank'.
If applying power to the Z cranks OK, then maybe the ign switch is failing. If still nothing, then maybe the starter.
Or... You could put a test light on the 'z' strip, and see if the light comes on when you turn the key. If a light there comes on, but no cranking, then starter or starter wiring problem (we know how crusty the wiring by the starter gets!).
If the 'z' stip doesn't go live when cranking, then probably an ign switch problem.

How is the black wire from the Igniton switch connected to the fuse panel?
On the '84 urq I'm getting juice at the switch but it's not getting to the fuses. I don't see the wire connected to the fuse panel is it passing through some other curcitry & getting a color change?

IF you have the 'new' style fusebox..
Schematic diagram of fusebox:

Relay position 8 is where the 'z' jumper is. (dotted lines).
Connector "B", terminal 50A goes to starter solenoid.
Connector above shown as between connector "F & "G" (but really IS "F"), terminal 50Z goes to ign key.
Pictoral view of fusebox (pay attention to 'front' and 'fender' labels):

I hope that this somehow answers your question!

To go with the above post ( as I can't edit it?)
Ign feed from ign switch goes in on red connector I, pin 15, Black, and comes out of the fusebox in a couple of places (some that are separately fused)
"X" relay trigger from ign switch (live when ign on, but off when cranking) goes in on red connector G, pin 75, Black Yellow

Odd..
>but get no power to the coil,(ICU)? horn,
wipers fp or inst cluster
HOrn & wipers appear to be on the 'x' (load reductions circuit, coil is not, Instument I don't think are. So separate problems, no?
Connector loose on the fusebox?
What IS getting power from the ign? Anything?
If the switch itself isn't gettign any power, then (obviously!) nothing will work...
