intermittent fuel injector issues

Default intermittent fuel injector issues

I have a 86 4kq with a rough running engine. The engine idles rough, not too rough, and when you give it throttle the engine sputters until rpms get to about 3000. At those RPMs it smoothes out.
My mechanic (who no longer has a job for the shop is closing at the end of the month) noticed that injector 3 and 4 were not firing, then at high rpms it started to. He said either those injectors are bad, or my fuel distributor is bad. Injectors are cheap, fuel distributors are not. Which do you guys speculate? I'm in the process of finding a new mechanic to work on it. However, the more info I can get the better.

Default Speculation

My thoughts...run a couple things of Techron through your gas tank and see what happens. The fuel injectors are constantly on, so I doubt they're at fault. How did he determine the injectors were 'not firing'?

Default The price depends if used or new....

new injectors for an 86 Golf are $70 Can a piece.
And a new fuel distributer is just not necessary. Get a used one. If you get used injectors, it may be a risk, because the condition is hard to tell by just looking at them.
I would first chack the spray patern on all of them, they should have a nice even spary (not squirt). Then try a fuel injector cleaner, which you dump in to your gas tank.

Swap injectors with a "good cylinder" and see the problem follows!!

At idle he removed the plug wires one by one to notice of the engine ran differently. When he removes plug 3 and 4 the engine did not change at all, but when he removed 1,2 or 5 it sputtered. Right now I have severe lack of power. I had already ran a **** of tecron through it, it helped, but not so much. I did see an earlier post from someone w/ similar problems, and new plug wires fixed it. I ordered some to see what happens, but if not, I found a place to get new injectors for ~$30ea. I'm going to hold on on the fuel distributor, I don't see how that would fail honestly.
