36V Forklift drive motor modified to run 144V or so. DC-PWM homebrew controller..
Not really a VFD as the frequency remains constant, just the pulsewidth changes. VFD's are used for AC motor control. Basically, I'm planning on using a small IC PWM motor control chip to drive a very high power (400A) IGBT transistor. I've got 4 of those one the way, so I can run them in parallel to have a capacity of up to 1600A, but that's just ludicrous and would probably burn up my batteries in a heartbeat. I'll probably just run 2 of them for 800A. That should be more than enough.
