Default Looking to join the fun, should I buy this (Long)

Hello, names Matt. I've been a lurker here for a long time. I've also been waiting for a decent coupe gt to come up for sale locally. I was at carlisle the last two years( w/Roaring Forties Gt40 replicas) and this year really got my blood flowing. Well I found a car for sale here in Louisville and wanted to get some opinions. The owner said he bought it and it needed a fuel pump. he put one on and had the car running. he since has let it run out if gas and thinks he burned up the used pump. Also while it was running he had a small fire in the rear. Which caught the undercoating and rear rubber brake line on fire.he thinks there was grass or leaves on the exhaust. the FD came and put it out. He said you can't tell it had a fire. The FD did put three holes in the decklid. power windows work. cracks in the dash otherwise he said the interior is great.seats are in great shape and all gauges seem to function. body is straight with a few small rust bubbles in one of the wheel arches. Price $450. seems like a goood deal to me. are all CGT deck lids the same? going to look at it this weekend. if you were me would you buy it?

Default Pay more to spend less

Are you looking for a project? Or something more along the lines of a daily driver? What's your budget?

If you just need something to tinker with I'd say you've found it, but if you're looking for something reliable and presentable out of the box, I'd pass and look for a nicer CGT. Well-maintained examples come up for sale pretty often and they're really not all that expensive. You can save yourself a lot of headaches and frustration by getting one that's been well kept.

Default 3rd

It needs a trunk lid, so you get one from the junkyard for $150. You're up to $600. You haven't fixed the fire damage, figure another $150 for parts and stuff there. Up to $750. Now you need a fuel pump...used maybe $75. Now you are at $825. You can buy a running, driving CGT for that if you look long enough.

Oh yeah, and the chances of you getting a trunk lid in the color you want are about 1 in 10.

I've owned over 50 vehicles, most of which were bought for less than $1000. There are good projects and bad ones. I think you can do better. That's a $150 Cancer Society Donation tax write-off type vehicle you're looking at.

thanks for the responses. I don't need this to be a daily right away. so thats not an issue. Also I'm no stranger to the sub $1000 car. My current daily is an 87 scirocco that I have about $160 in. I haven't seen this car yet but he says the only fire damage is to the rubber brake line. we'll see. I guess the decklid counts as fire damage too. I have already found a replacment though. Does this car share a fuel pump with the 4000 or 5000? Also does this car have the 016 transmission? I'm sure I will have better idea after I go look at the car. This is the first CGT I've seen for sale in Louisville In 2 years of looking. So I guess I might have the glass half full goggles on.
