Default New member with 1981 Coupe

Guys,

I have a 5S Coupe - I'm not sure if you got these in the states but it is a 1981 coupe with a 5 cylinder 1921 cc motor (motor type WN) and an auto box.

I've a few problems with the car
1. It tends to use heaps of oil - this tends to drip onto the road and comes from the air cleaner inlet, from the fuel pump mount on the head (it has a carb not Fuel injected). When I remove the hose from the top of the cam cover to the air cleaner you get heaps of grey vapour coming out of the vent on the cam cover. Is this a sign the rings are shagged, the cars done about 220,000 kilometres (130,000 miles).
2. It has a slight vibration which starts at about 50mph and you can just feel it through the steering - Would this be a sign of the front wheel bearings on it's way out.

I've been offered another motor that has had new rings and bearings, but is attached to a manual box. If I get the pedal box and clutch cable can the whole engine and gearbox be swapped over?

Default Shagged?

John, you can probably seal the fuel pump leak yourself with a new gasket. Even high-temp RTV silicone gasket will do. We call 'cam covers' valve covers over here. Try an oil with a greater resistance to flow to reduce blow by.... say 15W40. Front wheel bearings are expensive so why not have the two wheels balanced and see if that eliminates the 50mph shake. Look at your outer tie-rods before wheel bearings too. Cant help with the engine/tranny swap.

Welcome! Greetings from North Carolina!

I'm a relatively new member as well, and will say thet the guys that respond to your inquries seem to be a great bunch of folks.

I had a '83 4000s that used a group of oil towards the end of it's life... However never had the grey vapor you report. I knew this to be a definitive sign of aged rings...

Can't help with the motor/tranny swap.

Good luck!

Thanks,

I had two new tires fitted recently thinking they might cure the problem as the first set were not a matched pair - same size but different manufacturer. Cost of the bearings aren't an issue as I have a set which came witht he car. Justthat it looks like a real pain to fit them. I'll look at the tie rod ends this weekend. It's just had an inspection (not sure what you call them in the states) but the garages supposedly check things like tie rods, wear in bushes etc. The same garage recently did my Porsche and failed it on worn ball joints and tie rod ends so I'm pretty confident these won't be the cause but I'll check anyway.
How hard is it to change the weheel bearigns and do I need special tools?
Thanks for the advice

Jonathan,

Any advice on what else is involved or is best just to pull the motor from the 5 speed and put my auto torque converter etc on the back of the other motor?

hi

I live in Havelock North. one of the reasons I asked is that until a year ago I lived in Auckland where in the central library there is a GT workshop manual which one can borrow and I've found to be really useful in the pastwhen I've needed answers. I'm not an expert but have suffered most of the common faults Audis have. We currently have 86 coupe, 89 100 and had another 100 now sold. Good luck with your GT
