Odometer Failure?

Odometer Failure?
The odometer in my '87 4000S quit working! I know it had been disconnected before, I recently purchased the car and on the title it says "milage not actual."
The neither the trip odometer or the regular odometer work.
Has anyone else had this problem? Do you know how to repair it?
Thanks.

Re: Odometer Failure?
The only solution I have is to go to a junkyard and find one from another 4000 that works...I have a least 3 of those suckers laying around my house!(instrument clusters that is)

Mine is also broken. Is it illegal?
It's been broken for a couple of months now, but I have to get the car inspected soon. Don't they look at mileage? Is it illegal to have a non working odo? If not, I probably won't fix it.

Odometer Repair
Option 1: Send to VDO and pay roughly $125 to get it fixed.
Option 2: Do it yourself.
Not a "hard" job, but requires A LOT of patience. I've done it on my GT and even on older 5ks. These are mechanical, not electronic odos. They are driven by the speedo cable and then a gear transfers motion to a shaft, which then transfers it to a drive gear that drives the odo.
The problem is that over time the drive gear off the odo shaft "slips" and loses it's alignment with the "drive shaft". The gears are plastic.
The cheap solution is just to push the drive gear back into place (requires taking the guage cluster apart. pretty straight forward). This lasts maybe 500-1000 miles before slipping again.
The more patient solution is to either super glue the gear to the shaft (messy), or cut a notch into the odo shaft and attach a spring clip to prevent it slipping again.
I did the latter solution after having to do the previous one several times. I used a very fine, thin file to notch the shaft and found a very small spring clip in one fo my many coffee cans full of hardware. It's been about 1000 miles so far and no slipping.
It also helps to disassemble the switch the clicks on the OXS light as well. This supposedly creates some more "pressure" on the odo's drive system.
The OXS light is only fired on by the odo, not the Oxygen sensor itself. It's really just a reminder to replace the sensor every 30k.

Mine Broke a long time ago
Mine is dead, but i have no suggestions for you because the car is so old, I don't really care about the odometer. I plan on selling it to someone who knows the value of the 4000 cs quattro, so they're not gonna care either. Its a giant mystery to me how many miles i have, it has to be over 200. But she's 129 now, and forever will be.
