Default Ok, so I guess I fixed my clutch hydraulics... (Power bleeder ?'s)

So if anyone remembers a month or so ago my clutch hydraulics went out. I was bleeding it with a hand pump bleeder and it would last roughly 3-4 days before it would fail again. I had originally noticed that the fluid level was a tad low (and the clutch failed during some very spirited driving in a hard left hand corner) so originally I thought I sucked an airbubble in the feed line. Well after the clutch went dead another 2-3 times (I kept the hand bleeder in the trunk) i figured it was the master or slave and would replace them both.

About 2 weeks ago after tinkering with the 4kQ I wanted to take it for a spin so I put the hand bleeder through its paces (as fast as I could pump the damn thing) and got a really good bleed off the clutch slave, and ever since my clutch has been there. I havent gone and driven the car much (as being in the hills it's quite annoying to get down the mountain and THEN have the clutch fail) but regardless before just parked the clutch would fail within a few days. So now i figure it did have an air bubble and I didnt properly bleed the system the first few times (or at least the hand pump wasnt sucking through the fluid fast enough).

Today I ordered a motive power bleeder. I have used them in the past but not on a 4kQ, so figured I had better ask what an appropriate PSI is for the ol' girl?

With a proper power bleed I shouldnt have any doubt as to if there is an air bubble, or if one of my hydraulic pieces are intermittent (as nothing has leaked fluid, the original low reservoir was due to my neglect after purchasing the car.. there was so much dirt on it I had thought the "min" line was the "max" line heh).

Also, anyone else find it strange Audi put the clutch feed line post close to the MAX line on the reservoir? Why not place it lower??

Default Good to hear, I was wondering if the cap was the same from the 4kQ up...

As motive sells it generically for "European cars". Cant wait for this thing to come in, I don't like question marks when I'm driving my car...

Default Clutch feed level

I don't think you want use more than a few lbs (maybe 5?) of air pressure to bleed. You don't want to blow the resevoir off the master cylinder. Maybe start low, and see how it goes before getting up to much pressure?

Sure..

If the clutch slave dumps, and leaks fluid, a high up feed on the resevoir will keep the clutch leak from taking away all of your brake fluid. You still want some for your brakes!

Cap: My friend's bleed for his Volvo works on Audi resevoir also. Wouldn't be surprised that they are all the same..

Default Ahhh makes more sense now.... I am actually thinking of going remote...

Might be getting a remote reservoir to run for the clutch system alone, completely separate from the brake reservoir... none of this air bubble action for me....

something like this one...

This one is made by Girling, just not sure what the ID is on the feed line (shouldnt be hard to figure out.. large blue braided rubber hose.. Im guessing 5/16" ID?) They make a barbed fitting to thread on the bottom as well.

Default Dad's Ranger (88 4X4) hs a remote as well, you might find one at a salvage yard for cheap.

As for the hydraulics, I've done three slaves in teh last two months (Mike's 84 being one of them) and two of the three didn't "leak". However, when the master and slave were removed and taken apart (I rebuilt both) they both had fluid inside the boot, past the seal. So, although they didn't leak enough to leave a trail anywhere, they did still leak. And, Mike's was pretty bad. It doesn't take much fluid to cause problems.
