Default Oklahoma City ThunderIce Storm Update (Achtung! Graphics/Audi Intensive)

Reporting to the base was delayed by two hours today, providing much needed sleep-in time, and defrost the Jetta time. And despite my excellent driving skills in the rapidly melting ice sheets, as soon as I walk into the building, the power dies.

So what is a young Captain to do when he has a ESP equipped German car, free time, and many a road coated in ice. Drive around and take pictures of course! So here (in graphic format), are my journeys of today.

After waking up, what looked like snow yesterday (see previous "Who needs Quattro" post), everything melted, and refroze into solid ice last night. It took me and my roomate 30 minutes to defrost and de-ice my Jetta and her Echo.

<img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2045/2100997787_ea5f4627af.jpg?v=1197319980">

The Echo... sans 1/2" thick ice

<img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2106/2100997361_69bd69f1e5.jpg?v=0">

And on the way to the base, I saw many cars like this Chevy Aveo.... or should it be, Chevy "A-Stay-at-Homeo"?

<img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2073/2101018179_0174261c9f.jpg?v=0">

After they released us from work, I decided I desperately needed some coffee, and drove downtown. Here is what I saw, swerved around, and ran into.

The city's central parking garage was completely deserted.

<img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2353/2101003159_061c18c510.jpg?v=0">

Bricktown and Mid-town's trees were completely covered in ice and were cracking apart.

<img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2092/2101004319_ab744baf7c.jpg?v=1197320608">

<img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2159/2101784304_f7bf8a872b.jpg?v=0">

<img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2113/2101803218_e9f993580c.jpg?v=0">

Downtown (about 3 blocks from where I parked), was completely shut down, as all the trees along Robinson and Main were in the streets.

<img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2381/2101779940_ea5dfef8ac.jpg?v=0">

<img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2350/2101000065_82d53e8870.jpg?v=0">

And as I was laughing at the cars stuck under the trees, I walk back to my car, get in, and WHAM!...... I wasn't laughing anymore....

<img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2271/2101000495_96dd8a6907.jpg?v=0">

After dragging the tree from my car, I decided to stop by the Oklahoma City Memorial. The Survivor Tree seemed to be doing just fine.

<img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2290/2101009491_f0465b63b6.jpg?v=0">

<img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2099/2101785238_22bc8e1217.jpg?v=0">

And since I was in such a good mood after copious amounts of coffee, I decided to drive around a bit more.... and I ran into a Nissan dealership, with hundreds of SUV's..... all TWO WHEEL DRIVE!

<img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2178/2101798382_3a76b4ca50.jpg?v=0">

And guess what was next to Nissan? Bob Moore Audi!

Someone please buy this S4, it is just itching to go blasting around ice covered streets!

<img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2248/2101797934_0127e50a64.jpg?v=0">

The Audi's were inspiring. This next shot is just sad.... sad, sad, sad. The Porsche 911 Carrera S in the foreground retails for $93,000, and the Cabriolet in the background is $87,000. You would think they would have put tarps on or something. Maybe now they will give you a discount.

Stay tuned for Part 2, "When the Fox met Petunia"

Default It can be a pain.

Good thing you can turn it off. I had to get up the driveway with a little ice covered snow. The EDL worked overtime to stop the driver's side wheel from spinning. With the torque happy 2.0TFSI a tap of the gas was enough to get the brakes to smoke. I think it could use a limited slip diff eh?

Default Yep, Turbo Diesel, cold is no problem what so ever!

And I really do love the car. Handles well, has decent acceleration, very comfortable, and they engineer things into it you don't appreciate until you really need them, like heated side mirrors, and wipers that go to slow intermitent at stop lights so you don't get that wipers on dry windshield sound.

It does have a few glitches though.... but I would rather have glitches and a German car than a flawless Corolla!
