My 87 4kq was doing the same thing, I spent weeks trying to find out what the heck was wrong with my transmission. I was so worried the transmission was bad. I found my trans to be fine and it was just a stupid bushing(actually ball socket) on top of the transmission. ,What I did was put the car in neutral, opened the hood and reached into the engine bay toward the transmission, then I found the ball and socket joint and found that the ball had worn through the socket, so then I pulled up on the socket itself(toward the hood) and tried 1st gear and it slid right in but fell back down so ..........I proped it up with 3 zipties, and now I can shift!...I love zipties!
