try using the flywheel timing mark for static timing
you should be able to find the TDC mark on the flywheel using the port in the bell housing. (to rotate the engine w/o removing the timing cover, put the car in 5th gear and push..). the center of the rotor should point about the middle of the distributor cap contact for number one cylinder. (its usually the one just counter clockwise from the clip opposite the vacuum advance - but if somebody has removed the distributor or rearranged the wires, all bets are off). This should be good enough to get the car running. Stock timing is 6-8 degrees BTDC so if you want to get more advance, rotate the distributor opposite of the normal operating rotation. If its running you can time by feel by running it more and more advanced until the car pings (ie knocks - or is it called pinking in the EC?) then back off a degree or two. Most stock Audi's will ping on regular gas at about 10-12 degrees advanced - some on the board run that timing with premium for a little extra kick.
