Interesting...anybody else wanna chime in?
The trans was out of the car not even a year ago for clutch replacement. My worry is getting the car stable and high enough to pull this off, as well as lowering/raising the engine/trans/subframe as a whole.
Has anybody seen this done in a 4kq?
I really dont mind cutting the front of the car off though.
Good suggestion on this!

It might make it easier to take the intake manifold/head/exhaust manifold off.........
and then raise the car and drop it all at the same time. This way you don't have to raise the car so high to get the motor out from under it.

Possibly, but with the MC motor
Id like to have it all installed before I put it in the car, but I dont have to. Your way sounds good too. Ive never had to deal with taking the manifolds off of these cars, is it difficult to do? The intake manifold looks like it could be a PITA.

I bought the OM replacements and got the local front end shop to do it.
$200 cdn and a hassle-free fix. And does it make a positive difference! Especially with the diesel it shakes a bit more than a gasser so new rubber helped to isolate the vibrations. Feels much smoother now.
I'd say do it - you won't regret it.

You can pull the head off with both manifolds attached. You're a big strong guy, no?
To put the MC motor in, it may be easier to mount the subframe and drop the motor in from the top completely assembled.

Additional thoughts...
you probably will have to drop the subframe first by itself. The motor is not attached to it, and it may make it more difficult, if not hazardous to do so. This way, the trans has to be supported by a jack or something.

Out through the bottomis the way to go!
On my parts car,,I removed the engine by lowering it from a beam slung between two heavy duty ladders. (you may want something better than this for getting one back in! but it would sure cut down on time for renting an engine hoist!)
Recommendations to remove parts are a good idea but not necessary. Mine had the transmission attached, the intake manifold exhaust manifuld an down pipe and i was ok. Remember that is just for removal ( and 5 cylinder mounts different than a 4 cylinder)
let us know how you do it in the end
